Jeffrey Preston Bezos, who was previously known as Jorgensen, was born on January 12, 1964, and is an American entrepreneur, investor, media proprietor, and commercial astronaut. He founded Amazon in 1994, which initially started as an online bookstore and has now evolved into the world's largest online sales company, the largest internet company by revenue, and the biggest provider of cloud infrastructure services and virtual assistants through its Amazon Web Services branch. Bezos graduated from Princeton University in 1986 with a degree in electrical engineering and computer science. 


He worked on Wall Street for several years before starting Amazon. Bezos is currently the founder, executive chairman, and former president and CEO of Amazon. He has a net worth of US$121 billion as of March 2023, making him the third-richest person globally, and he held the title of the wealthiest person from 2017 to 2021, according to both Forbes and Bloomberg's Billionaires Index.


In addition to his work with Amazon, Bezos founded Blue Origin, an aerospace manufacturer and sub-orbital spaceflight services company in 2000. In 2015, Blue Origin's New Shepard vehicle successfully reached space and returned to Earth. Bezos himself flew into space on Blue Origin NS-16 in 2021. He also purchased The Washington Post for $250 million in 2013 and manages various investments through his venture capital firm, Bezos Expeditions. In September 2021, he co-founded biotechnology company Altos Labs with Yuri Milner, the founder of Mail.ru.


Bezos is recognized as the first centibillionaire on the Forbes Real Time Billionaires Index and the second person to ever achieve this feat since Bill Gates in 1999. He was named the "richest man in modern history" in July 2018 when his net worth reached $150 billion. According to Forbes, his net worth surpassed $200 billion in August 2020. Despite the COVID-19 pandemic, his wealth grew by around $24 billion in 2020. 


On July 5, 2021, Bezos resigned as Amazon's CEO and president and became the executive chairman while Andy Jassy, the CEO of Amazon Web Services, took over as the new CEO and president. As of September 2022, he was ranked second on the Forbes 400 list of the wealthiest Americans with a net worth of $151 billion.
